Computerized tomography (CT) has been used for decades by medical professionals to detect and diagnose injuries ailments. CT scanners are based on interesting physics, but due their bulk, cost, safety, hands experience with a scanner unrealistic undergraduate students. Therefore, operationally similar, yet small, safe, inexpensive desirable teaching tools. This project details the development of novel model scanning apparatus. The experimental setup presented utilizes visible light, short data acquisition time, operates same physics as its X-ray counterpart. apparatus employs laser photodiode image transparent material, while avoiding loss transmitted intensity through index refraction matching. A simple back-projection algorithm results in 2D cross section scan object. We found we could collect reliably samples 15 min.
